Today is the memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes and World Day of the Sick."I am the Immaculate Conception."These are the words Our Lady said to St Bernadette Sobirous, when the young saint asked the ‘beautiful lady’ who she was, and Bernadette had no idea what they mean, in the original French patois. This was in 1858, four years after Pope Blessed Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, with the bull Ineffabilis Deus, on this day, December 8th, 1854, defining that the Mother of God was preserved from all stain (macula) of original sin, by the merits of Christ which God saw (praevisa) beforehand. In other words, she was saved before the Saviour took flesh from her, as a unique and unrepeated privilege. Today, Fr Athanase would have turned 100 years old!In 1979, Br Michael O'Dwyer OFM Cap (pictured) made his First Profession.In 2003, the Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Joseph Oudeman OFM Cap. Today we celebrate the anniversary of religious profession of Fr Julian Messina OFM Cap and Fr John Cooper OFM Cap. They made their first profession in Wynnum on 31 January 1971. Br Bernard Francis Cunningham OFM Cap “Celebrate

Br Bernard Francis Cunningham OFM Cap “Celebrates 40 years of religious life” today. That is quite an achievement for someone who just a few years ago was knocking on heaven’s door and moved into nursing care at Nazareth House, Wynnum - where he has flourished.He was born on the 3rd of September 1950 at Carlton in Melbourne. Bernie’s father “Jack” John Cunningham was a very outgoing man, and his mother was the quiet “Mary” Elizabeth Mary Pick.Bernie’s His love of horses began when a kind lady named Margaret taught him to ride a horse at 14. He also liked running and entered many foot races. He also he worked in a grocery store where he restocked the shelves with goods. Then he joined the Capuchin Franciscan Order.“Bernie” did his Postulancy (the first year when joining religious life) in Henderson in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1981 with four other young men. At the time, the formation house in New Zealand was ministered to by the Capuchin friars from Ireland. He entered the Novitiate at St Laurence friary Wynnum North. Fr John Cooper was his Novice Master. Professed as a Capuchin brother on the 30th of January 1983 (pictured), Bernie is now the only survivor of that group of Novices.He continues to sketch racehorses, which is his unique hobby. Best described as a “Naive” artist, totally self-taught, he has the extraordinary talent of remembering horses’ names, the jockeys’ colours, etc. He also has the knack for picking winners and place-getters, much to the delight of his many friends who love to have coffee with him on Saturdays.Br Bernard has served the Capuchin Order in many places in Australia, like the Capuchin House at Hawthorn in Melbourne. Lastly, he ministered at Guardian Angels parish Wynnum. He is undoubtedly a Capuchin friar because the friars were called in the past: “Gregarious Hermits.” This big word means outgoing, sociable, hospitable, friendly, companionable, extroverted. It is a good description of our dear Brother “Bernie” whose family tree has its deep roots in the emerald, green clover of County Clare.Credit: text from Fr John Cooper OFM Cap
